The history of the Zurich Opera House starts with the “Aktien Theater” (joint-stock theater), which opened in 1834 with Mozart’s “Magic Flute.” The city's first permanent theater, it was established as a joint-stock company by Zurich's theater-loving citizens. Now with a seating capacity for approximately 1,100, the building was entirely renovated between 1982 and 1984, and an extension was added on Utoquai to accommodate a second, studio stage. Each season, more than 300 opera and ballet events are performed, consisting of premieres, revivals, concerts and lieder recitals. There are also countless workshops, tours and much more.
